Health And Safety Policy
Gardeners Nunhead Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Nunhead is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients, visitors and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with gardening work, including the use of tools, machinery, vehicles, chemicals and working in outdoor environments.
We recognise our responsibility to comply with relevant health and safety legislation and accepted industry best practice. Health and safety considerations are integrated into our planning, day-to-day operations and review processes to ensure our gardening activities are carried out as safely as reasonably practicable.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our key health and safety objectives are to prevent injury and ill health, reduce risks arising from our activities, and promote a positive safety culture. In particular, we aim to:
Identify and assess hazards connected with gardening, landscaping and grounds care work.
Implement proportionate control measures to minimise the risk of harm.
Provide clear information, instruction and training to our team.
Maintain safe and suitable tools, equipment and machinery.
Protect the health and safety of clients and the general public around our work areas.
Respond promptly to incidents, near misses and safety concerns, and learn from them.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Gardeners Nunhead is responsible for ensuring that appropriate systems are in place to manage health and safety effectively. This includes:
Establishing and maintaining this policy and supporting procedures.
Ensuring that risk assessments are carried out and regularly reviewed.
Providing suitable training, supervision and resources for safe working.
Ensuring that equipment is purchased, used and maintained in a safe condition.
Monitoring health and safety performance and implementing improvements where required.
Managers will lead by example, promote safe behaviour and ensure that health and safety is given equal importance to quality, environmental care and customer service.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee and contractor of Gardeners Nunhead has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. All team members are expected to:
Follow company safety procedures and site-specific instructions.
Use tools, machinery and substances only as trained and instructed.
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment provided for the task.
Report hazards, defects, near misses and accidents promptly.
Refrain from horseplay or unsafe behaviour on any work site.
Cooperate with management and clients on safety matters.
No employee is required to work in an unsafe manner. If anyone believes that conditions or instructions present a serious and immediate danger, work must be stopped and the concern reported at once.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting gardening work, we will assess the risks associated with the tasks, location and conditions. This may include considerations such as uneven ground, restricted access, traffic, overhead and underground services, weather and the presence of others nearby.
Safe systems of work and method statements are developed where necessary, especially for higher risk activities such as tree work, working at height, using powered machinery and handling chemicals. Where the work is carried out at a client’s property, we will take account of any specific site information provided and may ask about known hazards such as fragile surfaces, ponds, pets and children.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Vehicles
Gardeners Nunhead will ensure that tools, machinery and vehicles used in gardening work are suitable for the task, properly maintained and inspected at appropriate intervals. Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered equipment.
Safe procedures must be followed for the use, transport and storage of items such as lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, strimmers and pressure washers. Guards and safety features must not be removed or bypassed. Engines must be turned off and moving parts fully stopped before clearing blockages, making adjustments or leaving equipment unattended.
Chemicals, Fuels and Substances
Where gardening work involves the use of chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, fertilisers or cleaning agents, we will follow product safety data, regulatory guidance and our internal control of substances procedures. Only competent personnel may handle such products and they must use the recommended protective equipment.
Chemicals and fuels will be stored securely, transported safely and used in a way that minimises exposure to people, wildlife and the environment. Containers will be clearly labelled and any spills dealt with promptly and appropriately.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment is selected based on risk assessment and typical gardening activities. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and ear protection, protective clothing, high-visibility garments and respiratory protection where required.
Employees must use the equipment provided, keep it in good condition and report any loss or damage. PPE is considered a last line of defence and does not replace the need for sensible planning, safe systems of work and appropriate equipment.
Public and Client Safety
We take reasonable steps to protect clients, visitors and the public from risks arising from our work. Measures may include setting up exclusion zones, using warning signs or barriers, timing tasks to minimise disruption and supervising equipment in use.
Where work takes place in shared spaces, residential gardens or commercial premises, we will seek to coordinate with the client to manage access and ensure that children, pets and other parties are kept away from hazardous areas and activities.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses, property damage and significant safety concerns must be reported to management as soon as practical. We will investigate incidents to understand what happened, identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Emergency arrangements, including first aid provision and procedures for fire, serious injury or other emergencies, are communicated to staff. When working at client sites, we will cooperate with any existing emergency procedures and provide information on our own activities where relevant.
Training, Communication and Review
Gardeners Nunhead provides information, instruction and training appropriate to the roles and tasks undertaken by our team. This may include induction training, equipment-specific instruction, refresher training and toolbox talks.
Health and safety information is communicated clearly to employees and, where necessary, to clients and others who may be affected by our gardening work. This policy is reviewed periodically and updated in light of changes in legislation, work practices, equipment or incident findings.
By working together and following this policy, Gardeners Nunhead aims to maintain a safe and healthy environment for everyone involved in or affected by our gardening services.
